The voice of God

June 10, 2021 (Thursday)

Ever hear the voice of God speak to you? I’m not talking about some strange event. I’m talking about reading or hearing something you know was meant for you in that moment. This can be a confusing thing, so I wanted to offer an idea.

We begin in Hebrews 1:1, “In the past, God spoke through the prophets to our ancestors in many times and many ways.” [CEB] If we dig into the Old Testament we find God spoke through prophets. He also used Priests to teach people His word. The times and the ways God spoke were varied. Sometimes it was a straightforward message, other times it was illustration. For instance, one prophet was told to marry an unfaithful wife as an illustration of Israel’s relationship with God. Another was told to bury his underwear in the river….

Then in the New Testament we see a shift, “And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.” [Hebrews 1:2 NLT] In other words, God (the Father) spoke to us through Jesus (his Son). This is Jesus, creator and heir of all things.

Adding to the impact of this statement, the writer of Hebrews states, “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” [Hebrews 1:3 ESV] This verse claims that Jesus is God the Son. He is radiance, or light, of God’s glory. He is the EXACT imprint of God the Father. When we look at Jesus we see the image of the Father.

We also see a reflection of the Father’s power Jesus exercises by holding the universe together. I want to highlight the point that Jesus made “purification for our sins.” We tend to stop at the idea that Jesus provided salvation from our sins. The goal of our salvation is purification. Finally, Jesus has sat down at the “right hand” of the Father. At this point, Jesus serves a “mediator” “interceding” for us.

Let’s use this image. You are standing before the Judge. The evidence is clear, you are guilty. Your defense lawyer steps up and says “Dad, have mercy on them. I paid the price for that crime, I served the time.” Then the Judge pronounces you “GUILTY! But because of my Son, your penalty has been paid.”

When you need a word from God, just turn to Jesus. He’s got you covered!
