So far we have learned from Psalm 139 that God knows us and
that God is where we have been, are, and will be. Yet there is another truth we
must understand.
Before we were physically born, God created us and designed
us. “For you
formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb.” [Psalm
139:13 ESV] I understand this to mean, God designed us both psychologically and
physically. Children are not a “blank slate.” We are born with personality.
The truth is every human, born or unborn, was designed by
God. I think that also includes the component of destiny. Not the Heaven or
Hell eternal kind, but the destiny that fits in with human history (see verse
16). David exclaims, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful
are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
[Psalm 139:14 ESV]
“My bones weren’t hidden from you when I was being put
together in a secret place, when I was being woven together in the deep parts
of the earth.” [Psalm 139:15 CEB]
This is a verse of awe. Sometimes we just need to pause, take off our shoes
because the ground we are standing on is holy. I don’t think David thinks we
are put together in the “earth.” What David is trying to say is, this life being
assembled in the mother’s womb is beyond his ability to explain.
“Your eyes saw my embryo, and on your scroll every day was written
that was being formed for me, before any one of them had yet happened.” [Psalm 139:16 CEB] This is amazing. While we were a “blob”
of cells, before they became organs and limbs, we were a person. God wrote our
life down. God formed days for us to live BEFORE they happen.
Nothing in our lives surprises God. Nothing about our time
(and way) of death surprises God. While we are horrified at the death toll this
virus is taking, it’s not a surprise to God. A theological truth: Nothing will
kill you before the time written. Second theological truth: Nothing will extend
your life beyond the time written. No virus, cancer, or human weakness will
shorten our time. No medicine, diet, or healthy habit will extend our time.
(Caution: this does not excuse us from proper stewardship over our life and
body.)
So far this virus has killed 400,000+ Americans in almost a
year’s time, but that is only half of the number of Americans that are killed
in abortion clinics each year. God have mercy on us.
