Advent 2020 (6 of 28)

December 4, 2020 (Friday)

Day 6 of 28 in the Advent season.

Today’s reading is not really about Christmas. What I’m covering is a religious issue, NOT a political issue. When God called Jeremiah we read, “Before I created you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart; I made you a prophet to the nations.” [Jeremiah 1:5a CEB] During this time of pandemic crisis, I am stunned by the hypocrisy or our society and some of our American politicians.

We rightfully care for the lives lost during this pandemic (285,000+ as of this date). Our heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones. We are in an epic tragedy in the history of our country and world. But we have been in a worse loss of life for the last 47 years, few seem to notice… or care. Yet, 800,000 plus American citizens lose their lives every year due to abortion.

What God said to Jeremiah makes it clear that we, as humans, have personality that can be known BEFORE birth. We also have a God ordained purpose BEFORE birth. Consider the possibilities of what we have lost. If abortion had been legal, we might not have had George Washington Carver. We might not have had Martin Luther King Jr. If Hitler had his way, we might not have had Albert Einstein. Until we get to eternity, we will never know the horrific loss to our world and country’s science, medicine, religious, and social advances.

This tragedy is similar to what happened at the first Christmas. “When Herod knew the magi had fooled him, he grew very angry. He sent soldiers to kill all the children in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding territory who were two years old and younger, according to the time that he had learned from the magi.” [Matthew 2:16 CEB] Wrap your head around the fact that Herod did not just kill children in Bethlehem. He killed all the children in his area of rule.

“This fulfilled the word spoken through Jeremiah the prophet:  A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and much grieving. Rachel weeping for her children, and she did not want to be comforted, because they were no more.” [Matthew 2:17 – 18 CEB] Ramah is north of Jerusalem, Bethlehem is south. Which gives us the idea that Herod was doing more than just eliminate a possible future king. Notice we circled back to Jeremiah… someone God knew and ordained for a purpose before his birth.

Just a thought. During the time Moses was born there was a massacre of children. The book of Revelation describes Satan waiting to destroy a child. Just wondering what significate event of history the enemy of humanity, the Devil, is trying to prevent or slow down. Also wondering how long God will let it continue.
