2009 Lenten Devotional and Prayer Guide

Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)

Jesus gave this reply in response to the Pharisee’s question, “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the Law of Moses?” While the Pharisees sought to mock him, Jesus offered the immediate reply, “Love your God.” He added emphasis on how our love for God must be all encompassing—with our hearts, souls, and minds. What a comforting thought to know that this love will be returned many times over, if we simply give over ourselves completely to God. [Written by: Tammy]

Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” )Matthew 6:10)

Why would Jesus teach us to pray for God’s kingdom to come? God’s kingdom is not here on earth, yet. Why would Jesus teach us to pray for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven? Because it is not always done on earth! As humans, created in the image of God, we have “free will.” Granted, that image is broken by sin and our choices have become limited. As a general rule, we depend on God to bring His kingdom and will to us. Today we ask ourselves the question: am I in line with the will of God? It’s not a bad day to be courageous and ask God to bring you in line with His kingdom and will. [Written by: Pastor Dan]
